Necrotising fasciitis
Necrotising fasciitis is a type of bacterial infection that affects the soft tissues. The bacteria damage the surrounding blood vessels, making the tissue deficient in oxygen. The tissue cannot survive without oxygen and will subsequently die.
Like other tissue infections, necrotising fasciitis can arise after an operation because the bacteria have got into the body through the surgical wound. Or the necrotising fasciitis infection can affect a healthy person by entering the body via a cut, scratch or other injury.
Necrotising fasciitis claims
Infections such as necrotising fasciitis are often missed by medical practitioners. The necrotising fasciitis infection itself is rare, but the symptoms associated with the condition are indicative of infection. Medical practitioners should quickly recognise the signs of infection and take action, a process which should soon lead them to an accurate diagnosis.
Unfortunately this standard of care is not always achieved. Sometimes a patient’s symptoms are simply not noticed – normally this happens when a patient is in hospital having had an operation. Other times a patient actively seeks medical help but their symptoms are not understood, resulting in a misdiagnosis.
Tissue infections like necrotising fasciitis are very aggressive, so a delay in diagnosis will be very dangerous. It can mean the patient experiences extensive tissue death and a prolonged recovery. Fatal complications can even occur, including sepsis and organ failure. In fact, mortality rates are very high in patients who do not undergo emergency treatment.
Do you have a claim?
If your treatment was delayed because your infection was not diagnosed quickly, you could be entitled to make a claim. Or if your loved one passed away because of a delay, you could be entitled to make a claim on behalf of their estate.
A medical negligence solicitor will be able to tell you more. During an initial free enquiry, we will listen to the details of the case before suggesting whether you are eligible to claim compensation.
