Necrotizing fasciitis Bristol hospital
Necrotizing fasciitis (also spelt necrotising fasciitis) is a bacterial infection that is often misdiagnosed. This occurs because necrotising fasciitis is a rare condition and it may not be at the forefront of a clinician’s knowledge. Furthermore, necrotising fasciitis can mimic other conditions in the early stages, such as the flu. Consequently a diagnosis is not made until the later stages when the condition is advanced.
However, a delayed diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis is potentially very problematic as treatment must be given early on. Otherwise the bacteria will advance to an ever increasing area, creating more and more dead tissue. The bacteria may also travel to the bloodstream, leading to a deadly illness called sepsis. This may eventually result in multi-system organ failure and extensive surgical debridement (possibly involving an amputation). In some cases, a delay in treatment will be fatal.
Suing a hospital for necrotizing fasciitis
If you or your family member experienced complications because a hospital did not diagnose and treat necrotising fasciitis, you need to talk to a solicitor today. This is because you could be able to sue the hospital in question. This is known as making a medical negligence claim. If successful, you will be awarded a sum of money as a form of compensation. To find out more, you should speak to a lawyer who specialises in medical negligence law (also called clinical negligence law).
It is likely that you will be able to make a claim if the hospital failed to make a diagnosis despite there being clinical signs of necrotising fasciitis, or failed to provide immediate treatment after a diagnosis was made. If your loved one has died of necrotising fasciitis complications, you could be able to make a claim on their behalf.
